Arts Council Nelson is proud to present RAW 2023 and invite you to submit 2D & 3D artworks for this special exhibition at the
Refinery ArtSpace (114 Hardy St) 14th March – 6th April 2023.
RAW aims to showcase works:
* created by people who have no formal or traditional art training
* that express individuality and inventiveness
* that are ‘RAW’ – uncooked by cultural and artistic influences
Key Dates:
* Closing Date for digital images (Entries from outside Nelson) – Tuesday 28th Feb 2023
* Artists from outside Nelson advised on selection by – 5pm Wednesday 1st Mar 2023
* All Artworks to arrive at the Refinery ArtSpace by – Friday 10th Mar 2023
* Exhibition at the Refinery ArtSpace: 14th Mar - 6th Apr 2023
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
Eligibility: Entry is free and open to anyone currently living in New Zealand who has not undertaken formal or traditional art training.
Artists may submit up to 3 entries. Work must be the artist’s own design and execution. There are no entry fees.
Work may use any media and technique (or mix of) and may be two or three dimensional. There is no limitation on the size of work, which may be free-standing, wall mounted or suspended.
Selection: Work will be selected based on originality and on meeting the aims of the exhibition (as above). Priority will be given to new work which has not been previously exhibited in the Nelson Region. If work has been exhibited previously, please state details of this on your entry form.
Presentation: Works should be well-presented; ideally, suitably mounted or framed as appropriate. However, un-mounted work on paper will be accepted, but entrants should note that pins may be used to hang these works. Any dry media work on paper must be adequately protected with ‘fixative’.
FOR ENTRANTS OUTSIDE THE REGION: The initial selection of work by artists residing outside the Nelson region is by digital photographic image only. Images should portray the work in its best light for selection purposes, feel free to add an optional close-up image to show work details if/as appropriate. Please ensure that the artist’s name and the work title are clearly marked as the file ‘name’. Please note that image files should be no larger than 2Mb. Image files along with a completed Entry Form should be emailed to: [email protected] by 5pm on Tuesday 28th February 2023.
For those outside the region On completion of the initial selection process we shall contact all entrants to advise on the outcome on March 1st. Selected entrants only will be invited to send their actual work(s). Work must reach Refinery ArtSpace by 5pm on Friday 10th March 2023.
FOR LOCAL ENTRANTS: Those that reside within the Nelson region do not have to submit photographs of work, actual works may be delivered along with their entry form to the Refinery ArtSpace by 5pm on Friday 10th March 2023.

FOR SELECTED WORKS
These may be subject to a final selection process for which the suitability for space and the general look will be considerations to best feature a work in the final showcase. In the event of any short-listed entries not being included in the final showcase, artists will be notified of this prior to the exhibition opening on Tuesday 14th March 2023, to which all artists, friends and family are invited.
All selected work is to arrive at the Refinery ArtSpace, 114, Hardy Street, Nelson, by Friday 10th March 2023.
Selected Work must arrive ready for hanging or placing, should your entry need an unusual install, we would appreciate receiving any specific instructions and inclusion of any extra fittings/requirements. If you have any questions regarding best hanging practise please ask us for guidance. Every effort will be made to install selected works to their best advantage. All packaging materials must be clearly named for use when returning work as appropriate.
The artist’s name, title of work and retail sale price or NFS (Not for Sale) must be written clearly on the back of the artwork or attached label. Sales will be subject to a Gallery commission of 25% + GST, although it is not compulsory that work be for sale.
Exhibition: All selected work must remain on display in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition: 14th March – 6th April 2023
Insurance is the responsibility of the artist, both whilst on display in the gallery and in transit. All due care and diligence will be taken; however, the organizers cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss incurred.
Return of Work: Local artists should collect unsold work from the Refinery ArtSpace, on Tuesday 11th April from 10am.
For artists outside of Nelson, return courier tickets must be included with the artwork, placed in an envelope clearly marked with the entrant’s name. Courier fees are the responsibility of the entrant. Unsold works will be returned as soon as possible following the exhibition. Entrants will be notified of sales prior to the closing date of the exhibition wherever possible. Any supplied courier tickets no longer required shall be returned to the artist as appropriate.
Use of imagery: In entering work to this exhibition, artists impart permission for selected entries to be publicly exhibited at the Refinery ArtSpace and for work to be reproduced for cataloguing purposes and/or promotional usage for this and future exhibitions. Work title and artist acknowledgements will apply in any such image usage. Please note that Arts Council Nelson reserves full editorial control over what supplied information is used or omitted for all promotional material.
