Call for Chorus Art Cabinets Mural Designs
Chorus and Nelson City Council wish to continue the celebration of Nelson’s creativity with the commissioning of five new artworks on Chorus telecommunications cabinets.
Arts Council Nelson now invite artists to submit design images for consideration by noon on Monday 12th September 2022.
Two cabinets have been designated to Rangatahi/Youth artists (16 – 25 years), the other three are open to all ages. Three cabinets have no theme attached to them, but two do have a specific design brief theme. Please see below for details on the cabinets that have been selected for murals.

Artists will receive the fee associated with the cabinet they have been selected to paint and will be reimbursed for materials up to a maximum of $150.
Entrants may submit as many designs as they are eligible for, for one or any number of the cabinets. Each design should show the full colour image as it would appear on the front and sides of the cabinet (the back requires no image).
Selected designs will be recommended to Chorus who have final approval. Payments will be made by Chorus to selected artists on completion of the work.
The Selection Process
Following a shortlisting process, selection of artists/designs will be undertaken by Council’s Art Selection Panel.
Preferred designs will be suggested to Chorus who will give final approval of the selection.
All submissions will be shown to iwi cultural managers who will advise Council on Māori and cultural matters.
For any toi Māori (art using Māori imagery, knowledge or language) presented for this project, there will be a requirement that appropriate cultural competency is evident.

- The quality and completeness of the information provided in the submission/application form
- The designs alignment to the themes or age criteria (if any) for the Chorus box
- Artistic merit of the design
- Artists ability to complete the work in the allocated time and budget
- For the selection phase of toi Māori designs only, the artists background, training and mentors.

Making a Submission
Submissions must be emailed to Arts Council Nelson and include:
- A completed Entry Form. (If you submit multiple designs, please supply a separate form for each entry). [See above for form download]
- A brief explanation of your design and if appropriate, how it has a particular relevance to site (500 word maximum) If your design is chosen this may be used, along with your image and details on Nelson City Council, Chorus and ACN’s digital platforms.
- Colour digital images preferably JPEG files less than 2mb of your design(s) which should show the design covering the street front and the two side panels. If this is problematic, please contact ACN who can assist.
- Budget (estimated cost of paint/brushes/preparation materials) NB: Do not include the cost of the Anti-Graffiti coating as this will be supplied by Nelson City Council / Arts Council Nelson.
Terms and Conditions for Selected Artists
- The artist(s) whose design(s) is/are selected by Chorus will be responsible for cleaning and applying a primer to the cabinet, painting the design on the cabinet, and applying a graffiti coating on completion which will be supplied to the artist by NCC.
- The cost of agreed materials (primer, paint, brushes etc.) will be covered by Chorus up to a maximum of $150.
- The artist will be responsible for the Health and Safety of the work site and must send Chorus a risk management plan prior to work starting. Arts Council Nelson can assist with this as required.
- On completion of the mural ACN shall check the work has met the agreed requirements after which the artist will invoice Chorus for their mural fee and materials as agreed.
