African drumming workshop, Nelson Term 1, 2019
14 Feb–4 Apr · Victory Community Centre. Hosted by InRhythm NZ.
We are back for more drumming in 2019! Come and play a West African rhythm on a Djembe drum in a fun and supportive community environment. Drumming lowers stress, improves brain health, improves physical and mental health and increases circulation. The phenomenon of musical entrainment, which happens when we make music in a group, makes it easier to access our natural rhythm. If you have a heart beat, you have rhythm (despite what you might have been taught to believe!)
Check out our website at www.inrhythm.co.nz to learn more.
Cost for the 8 week term is $100. Casual drops in are available for $15 cash, but please keep in mind that we learn new things every week, so casual drop ins can get tricky as the course progresses. Beginners are recommended to attend the whole course, or at least drop in before week 4.
There are plenty of drums to use, or bring your own if you prefer. All drummers over 12 yrs old are welcome, no experience is needed and beginners are welcome.

Adopt a NCMA Orchestra
Love music? Want to support our talented local musicians?
At the end of last year we had over 500 enrolled students. At least half of these perform in one of our orchestral groups, ensembles or choirs.
Unfortunately rising numbers means rising costs. Reluctantly we must now charge children to attend orchestras, but we would like to keep fees at an affordable level. Sponsorship or "adoption" of one of our groups would assist us to do this. If you think you can help, please contact the NCMA Director, James Donaldson to have a chat. Thank you! La Ronde- improvised theatre intensive Saturday 2nd March 2019
La Ronde is an improvised theatre format where two characters (player A and player B) have a scene together. Once that scene is completed, player B has a scene with someone new (player C). This continues on until you want to complete the performance. The last character introduced connects in with player A, from the first scene, closing the loop. It is amazing what is revealed about these previously unknown characters in this style of play!
In this intensive, we will practice some storytelling tools such as establishing the 'who,' 'what' and 'where' of a scene. We will also investigate the 'truth' of a situation, what is going on for these characters beyond the surface of what they are doing.
This workshop is best suited to participants with previous improv or acting experience. 1pm - 5pm Venue TBC $25.00 To register for this workshop, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Your tutor is Lisa Allan. www.wintergreencreative.co.nz

Free beginner classes for primary and intermediate school children
Our free beginner music classes are made possible thanks to a small annual grant from the Ministry of Education. These small group classes are intended to provide an introduction to music so that young people can get a taste of music and trial various instruments. Visit our free beginner class page to learn more about the range of instruments on offer and to register your child’s interest.
NCMA music classes - At NCMA we are growing and developing the range of classes that we offer. Currently we offer a preschool music class and coming soon is a fantastic creative improvisation class. Some of our accredited teachers also run a number of small group classes which are perfect for those moving on from our free beginner classes. For more information visit our search page.
NCMA music groups - An essential part of music education is learning the art of performance. At NCMA, we have many performance groups to support this vital aspect.
