Morris Dancing - GIve it a GO
Tuesday 30th April-Tuesday 14th May 2019
Ragged Crow Morris Dancers are offering a series of three, one and a half hour workshops on getting started in morris dancing one of the oldest continuing English traditions.
Morris dancing is not a competitive dance, we enjoy 'strutting our stuff' so we only dance in public when we know that we can put on a great performance.
If you have a sense of rhythm, as sense of humour and enjoy good company why not Give it a Go at our series of workshops on April 30, May 7 and 14.
At the end of the workshop series there may be an opportunity to join Ragged Crow.
No one knows where morris dancing originated, all that can be said is that it is very old and has had many influences.
Ragged Crow dance two different morris traditions; one from the Cotswold region based on dances that were collected in the early 20th century and one from the Welsh Border region which are mainly contemporary dances based on an old tradition.

ROCK CAMP 2019 at The Playhouse Theatre.
ITS BACK!!! for a 10th time! Thats right! Its ROCKCAMP 2019
This week of music and fun is designed for kids aged 9 to 15 of all musical ability and talent. The camp focuses on performance more than technique, encouraging students to form small bands on the first day of the course and practice throughout the week working towards a concert to be held on the Friday evening for friends, family and the public. The dates of the 2019 Rockcamp are Monday 15th till Friday 19th. (The second week of the July school holidays.)
Other elements like The history of rock music, a group song writing session, and a trip to NMIT music department and Radio Works studio are also on the cards for the kids over the week, promising a learning environment for the participants and no chance to get bored. We have also had features on National Radio and the Nelson Mail in the past.
The Playhouse is a fantastic venue for the camp with a full professional stage, lighting and PA gear for the campers to play on, plus a large backstage and outdoor area to run around on during down time. The Camp is fully catered by the Playhouse chef, with a focus on healthy food options and children's dietary requirements..no deep fry at this camp!
The camp will be limited to 15 students, aged 9 to 15 years of age. The last camp sold out, so please make contact early to insure your child's spot. It will be hosted by 2 tutors with guests tutors coming in during afternoons to work on specific skills.
A great group of tutors include Anna Maitland (with a Masters in Music), Sahn Bishop (of the local bands Rabbit hole and Boogie Train) and Nic Roland (the owner of the Playhouse).
The cost of the camp is $400 for a full weeks tutoring, this also includes food for the week and a live performance on the Friday night. Transport can also be organized daily. The dates of the 2019 Rockcamp are Monday 15th till Friday 19th. (The second week of the July school holidays.)
Please contact Nic Roland on 5402985 for more details about this event and a signup sheet.
Sing Out: Nelson Male Voice Choir Seeking New Members
The Nelson Male Voice Choir perform 3 major concerts each year in the Nelson-Tasman region. Each concert contains different music and there is usually a theme. Other talented local artists help make each concert memorable.
Keen male singers are invited to join NMVC at their Monday evening rehearsals, 6.45pm at the Reformed Church of Nelson. The choir is currently under the direction of Welsh-born conductor, Andrea Hamilton assisted by accompanists Pauline Boyd and Susan Stokes. Please contact NMVC Secretary, John Foes-Lamb on 03 544 3131 if you are interested in joining.
Adopt a NCMA Orchestra
Love music? Want to support our talented local musicians?
At the end of last year we had over 500 enrolled students. At least half of these perform in one of our orchestral groups, ensembles or choirs.
Unfortunately rising numbers means rising costs. Reluctantly we must now charge children to attend orchestras, but we would like to keep fees at an affordable level.
Sponsorship or "adoption" of one of our groups would assist us to do this.
If you think you can help, please contact the NCMA Director, James Donaldson to have a chat.
