ENTRIES ARE NOW OPEN for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards!!

Voluntary groups and community organisations in both Nelson City and Tasman District are eligible for these awards. We know you are a part of one or two groups out there in the community – so listen up….

Voluntary groups fundraise, they build and preserve things and they host events. They coordinate health support groups, they run culture groups and they teach children new skills and sports. Some even save our lives and property when we call on them – and this is often on top of work and family commitments too.

If you take a minute to sit back and look at our community, you will quickly see that voluntary groups really are everywhere working hard to provide so much for our community- from Plunket groups to church groups, to PTAs and community projects happening in your backyard….the list is never-ending!

Making an entry is a great way to say ‘THANKS’ to a voluntary group – we all know of at least one! It takes a few minutes of your time but it will make a real difference to the volunteers you are recognising (remember volunteers are busy and modest people so they might not have time to enter themselves!) And there is over $6,500 to give away at the Community Awards evening – which you will be invited to if you enter a group.

To enter a voluntary group:

1.) You can enter online at - www.communityconnect.co.nz/enteronline

2.) Reply to this email for a form, or with details of a group

3.) Call Teresa Partridge on the details below for a form or she can take the details over the phone

NICE AND EASY - and it only takes a few minutes!

GO ON, say ‘THANKS’ to your local voluntary group and enter them today!

ENTRIES CLOSE ON FRIDAY 17 MAY 2013.

Call for help…….from Laura Irish

I've been accepted into the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. It's a 5 week course, a Shakespeare Intensive in New York City for 26 actors from around the world chosen each year in their conservatory. I had to audition and interview and I thought that was the hard part. The hard part is actually getting there and making sure my family doesn't suffer financially in the long run. Going to this school has been my dream since I was a teenager and now I have the chance.

So friends... I need you guys. The course starts June 3rd, the day after my 31st birthday. Really soon!!
So, here's a plea to anyone that loves me, likes me a little, wants me to owe them a gigantic favour or wants to see me leave New Zealand for 5 weeks, here's the link to make it happen. In order to pay for course fees ($3,250 USD), accommodation in NYC, food and rent for my house while I'm away I'm trying to raise the money before I go. The timeline is super short but I just found out yesterday that I was accepted.

http://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/laurairish

If you're not in a position to help in this way, I would be so grateful if you could pass this on to others who might know me or might be interested.
I'll also keep you posted on a potential fundraiser in Nelson organized by Mike O'Malley and if you'd like to get involved with that via performance or some of my friends are making things to sell or any other ideas, anything is welcome and soooo appreciated!

And I would never have gotten this far without Charles Anderson who convinced me to apply and helps to push me, Doug Brooks who made my video audition for me, The Nelson Mail for the article that comes out sometime this week and Body in Space for the past 3 years of love and experience.

And not to mention, my cousin, Michael, who gave me Stella's book, The Art of Acting, when I was 13... it totally went over my head at the time, so glad he did it.

Anyway, thank you for reading this email and sharing a little portion of this journey and this dream with me. I am so excited and so overwhelmed with how supportive people have been already thus far.

Be a part of our project and help create the many 'faces' that make artistic Nelson/Tasman

We are a group of NMIT Bachelor of Arts students - Dennah Lloyd, Frances Dick, Gertrud Kaiser and myself, Chrissie Cleary who (as part of our course) are organising an art exhibition to take place in G Space Gallery, G Block, NMIT' on June 17-21 this year.

Our idea is to ask as many Nelson/Tasman artists as possible to take a black and white photo of their face and then simply send it to us att. to email. The self-portrait can represent the artist in any way they choose; composition is open to individual interpretation, i.e. anything goes, just as long as the submitted image is recognisable as a human face! We're positively looking for quirkiness and originality, which doesn't rule out wigs/plastic noses/funny hats - that kind of silliness J

(an important element of this project is subtle humour, it's not meant to be deadly serious). Or if the artist prefers, they can submit a moody, atmospheric image - that's good too - we're pretty much open to anything (as long as it's predominantly a face shot). For enlargement purposes (please see below) the photo must be a high resolution image.

The concept behind our project is the reversal of what you'd expect to view in a Nelson gallery showcasing the artistic talent of Nelson/Tasman - we choose instead to reveal the physical face of the individual artist (the human 'force') that exists behind every piece of artwork, whatever medium. The creator as art and not the created piece - the photo is the artwork.

Ultimately our final gallery display depends on the number of photos submitted, but the plan is to create a number of large-scale posters featuring the images in a grid-like pattern which will (at best) completely cover the interior walls of G Space. We expect it to be a visually exciting experience when confronted by a mass of human faces on all sides; each uniquely individual portrait taken by the artist themselves. It will be fascinating to see the response of both artist and viewer.

At this stage we're looking for expressions of interest, so if anyone would like to be a part of our project and help create the many 'faces' that make artistic Nelson/Tasman what it is,

please reply to Frances - franie_2@hotmail.com, who will forward any queries to the group. Once we have a definite list of interested parties we will then set a final date for photo submission and contact each artist directly.

It's important to note that we do require a fairly rapid response as there is much to do before the exhibition opens on June 17. In the meantime please feel free to ask any questions, many thanks. Kind regards, Chrissie Cleary

(Feel free to participate!)

Expressions of interest sought from visual artists in the Nelson region.

Established artists and designers experienced in producing large scale art (painting, mosaic, sculptural relief) for the home, work place or public space, are invited to contact Chris Finlayson > cjfinlaysonart@gmail.com

This is about collecting professional artists willing to work within a theme and present their art in an outdoor environment.

Ten wall sites along the Maitai Riverside walkway are the focus for developing an art project that distinguishes seven different categories of mural style. These are; decorative, representational, motif, tromp'loeil, urban, architectural and sculptural. Some categories may cross-over.

The theme, in short is >current, historic and cultural inter-actions with the river.

The art project is called - Riverside Murals and at best, will work in with existing public artworks to modify this part of the city, adding to a riverside walkway art and recreation experience unique to Nelson.

Light Nelson ~ Get involved……….

Light Nelson is a new initiative that will be launched in July 2013 in collaboration with Nelson School of Music and the Winter Festival.

Light Nelson is a collaboration of Art, Science and Technology to develop works that respond to darkness through illuminated installations, that will attempt to offer the viewer a moment of magic, illusion, beauty, interaction and fun.

The event will take place in Queens Gardens spilling into Albion Square and the Chinese garden.

Although Light Nelson is an artist driven event it is fantastic opportunity for people with a wide range of skills to get involved. It also offers an opportunity for some unlikely collaborations between people of very differing backgrounds and expertise as well as an opportunity to learn new skills and to be inspired to follow a new path.

We aim to make this event unique and to reflect the diversity, the community spirit, the artistic talents and the ingenuity of the people of Nelson. We believe that everybody in this city has something to offer this event. If you'd like to get involved just register on this site and we will e-mail updates and opportunities for you to be part of this event. http://lightnelson.org.nz

Call for Submissions - Kitsch Matchbox Studios

We are now looking for a range of works for an upcoming group exhibition that explores the idea of kitsch which will run for two weeks in August.

Fine art has often been handicapped by an internal elitism that enforces a strict criteria of what art is or can be. Art that wasn’t considered up to the grade was often labelled kitsch for being too sentimental, marketable or having popular appeal. While this notion is constantly being challenged today it is still a tradition that holds a great deal of power. This exhibition will showcase a range of works that brings a bit of kitsch into the gallery. The theme is up for broad interpretation and works across a range of media will be considered.

The closing date for submissions will be July 17th. There is an inclusion fee for the show, which means we take care of promotion, posters, and an opening night event. If you are interested please submit images to Caleb at caleb@matchboxstudios.co.nz.

University of Otago Arts Fellowships

In his editorial notes for the quarterly Landfall in March 1959, Charles Brasch argued that 'part of a university's proper business is to act as nurse to the arts, or, more exactly, to the imagination as it expresses itself in the arts and sciences. Imagination may flourish anywhere. But it should flourish as a matter of course in the university, for it is only through imaginative thinking that society grows, materially and intellectually.'

At the University of Otago we believe that our writers, artists, composers, musicians and dancers have a vital role to play in the health and well-being of our community - not just the University community or the Dunedin community, but the wider community of New Zealand. We look to them to offer us visions we cannot make ourselves; we rely on their craft to generate the experiences which will challenge us, entertain us, provoke and reassure us, and tell us who we are.

Each month a poem is displayed in the window of Nelson Provincial

Museum, on the Hardy Street side.

too small to be read comfortably from the footpath. However, an extract

I am looking for a screenplay for a short film with a strong female lead character to get off the ground and get made this year. I work in the film industry as an actor, an AD and a Script Supervisor. A lot of my contacts in the industry (particularly producers, directors and DoP’s) are wanting to make short films this year and are just looking for the right script. Could this be your script?

I am looking for a screenplay that would have a challenging / engaging / interesting acting role in it for myself.

I was classically trained at one of the top drama schools in London and I have a strong passion for film, particularly more arthouse genre pieces, but I am happy to read any submissions at this stage. I began my AD & Continuity career in the industry a few years ago in London and have now returned to New Zealand.

Initially, only I will be reading the script. I will consult you first if I would like to pass it on to a producer or director or anyone else, so you know who it is being passed onto.
