LYDIA COLE and LUKE THOMPSON at The Free House
Wednesday 1st May
Lydia Cole spent the last 18 months in hibernation, where she turned to her allies - music, art and time - for healing. The outcome is a powerfully intimate collection of songs about love, loss and hope - Lydia’s debut full-length record ME & MOON. The ride thus far has seen Lydia share the stage with the likes of Boh Runga, Greg Johnson, Nathan King, and Luke Thompson, with support slots for Brooke Fraser on her Australasian ‘Flags’ tour, and jazz legend Diana Krall, and even a spontaneous song on stage with Jon Foreman (Switchfoot).

Rachel Dawick and Jon Sanders will be perform these MUSICAL TALES OF PIONEER WOMEN Fairfield House Thursday 2 May at 7.30pm $15 door sales. www.racheldawick.com
We launch NZ MUSIC MONTH with an exciting Creative NZ sponsored project; BOUNDARY RIDERS featuring RACHEL DAWICK & JON SANDERS
"The history of NZ folk song is a history told by men. Our pioneer stories show us one side of our colourful past. Where are the women's songs? stories? We have such a rich array of colourful female characters in our history that these stories need to be heard. If the songs aren't there then as a songwriter I will have to find the stories and write them myself" Rachel Dawick on Radio NZ June 2011. and that's just what she did!!
The historic trail began over two years ago when armed with a grant from Creative NZ Rachel embarked on 40 day solo tour across the country performing, collecting and digging up stories of women in 1800‚s NZ. A second further collection tested her own boundaries as she cycled the length of NZ from Cape Reinga to Bluff with only a ukulele, a one person tent to her name and 2000km to travel. With many stories shared on the road, & a final concert in Christchurch marking the end of the long journey Rachel finally came off the saddle and began the long process of collating and sorting the research till each character‚s story fully appeared & provided the starting point for each of the songs of the prostitutes, the gold miners, the entertainers, the nurses, the business women, the missionary wives, the women who made NZ what it is today. These are the untold stories of our history.

Dance Party with Grant Smithies
Dance party in the Deville’s Café courtyard on Saturday, May 4th, the last event of the year before the really cold weather kicks in.
As some of you may know, May 4th is international Star Wars Day (“May The Fourth Be With You”) so dodgy spacesuits, Jedi outfits, Princess Leia togas and other such space-related outfits are encouraged if you feel so inclined.
The party’s called “Africa On The Moon”, and in keeping with the name, I’ll be playing a mix of spaced-out house tracks, raw 70’s funk, Jamaican dancehall, and killer African dance cuts from Mali, Ghana and Nigeria, with a couple of guest DJs playing earlier in the night to warm things up.
Event runs from around 8.30 pm until midnight. As before, there are very limited tickets, and these go on sale at Deville TODAY , so please, send out this attached email poster far and wide as soon as possible, and encourage your mates to get down to Deville and nab a ticket without delay as they always sell out well before the event.

The Boathouse
We will have Nadia Reid & Luckless visit during their "Ballads And Badlands Tour ". 17th May, 8pm start, tickets obtainable for $10 from www.undertheradar.co.nz & $15 door sales.
"We have to choose what we carry with us. All things must be selected carefully, balanced, weighed, and packed so as to abandon nothing of consequence. This Music Month, for their Ballads and Badlands Tour Nadia Reid and Luckless have parsed their emotional and physical baggage down to size so as to free-wheel down the highway, through drought, storm and tussock, offering their stories and songs to whoever will lend them an ear.
Their station-wagon is small, but carries a lot of weight: the lyrics, the guitars, the histories and hopes; stories of the ashes and rubble left lining streets both real and metaphorical. Together, Reid and Ivy Rossiter of Luckless form a part of a new generation of songwriters born to take to their stories the road, to pin their words and harmonies to hearts and minds as far and wide as possible. This is no gloss-laden floss-pedaling romp through a handful of chords. Both performers craft work laden with texture and space, light and dark, tales of joy and sorrow blending with the feeling of the in-between.
Nadia Reid is one of the great, young musical prodigies at work in New Zealand today. At only 21, her much lauded EP sent critics spiraling with praise. Born of Port Chalmers, coming of age in the musical mecca of Christchurch and now building towers of song in the metropolis of Auckland, Reid presents tales of love and loss through a new-folk glass, echoing songwriters such as Beth Orton or Laura Marling. She carries her stripped back, acoustic songs to audiences with poise and a grace that belies her young age.
Formerly of Auckland, now living as a musical nomad, Ivy Rossiter has been burning the candle at both ends around the country since releasing Luckless’s debut album in 2012. Her electrified take on the craft of songwriting, combined with a predilection for unexpected and challenging musical directions, have melted hearts across the country, calling audiences back for more. With an arsenal of new songs and a second record on the boil, Rossiter has tire-tracks on her heels and fire in her blood, ready to bruise a heart or two along the way.
Together, Reid and Luckless are an arresting combination – Reid’s acoustic new-folk cadence and clarity meld with Rossiter’s distorted abrasiveness and looping chaos; the breadth and beauty of the show culminating in a collaborative set of badland ballads, both new originals and long-familiar favourites.
The Ballads and Badlands Tour will be visiting towns nationwide from the 9th to the 26th of May Music Month 2013 . Tickets available from www.undertheradar.co.nz."

Haggis Sandwich
Friday 17th May
Haggis Sandwich – Gourmet offering from Andrew London and Steve McDonald at The Playhouse Cafe,
Kiwis love Andrew London and the lyrics he dreams up as a performer with Hot Club Sandwich. And given the number of Kiwis who claim Scottish descent, it is not surprising that Steve McDonald’s Celtic inspired music inspires floods of patriotic nostalgia. Now the two team up in Haggis Sandwich, a wide-angled and often irreverent approach to Kiwi culture – where some of it came from (Scotland), where it is now, and what we can expect in the future, given the everyday issues that consume and confuse so many of us. Food fads, youth culture, male insecurities, weddings, rugby, coffee – all of these and more are explored and exploited in Haggis Sandwich.

Friday 31st May to Monday 3rd June - Queens Birthday Holiday weekend in Nelson.
Nelson is the place to be for traditional Irish music and the craic, over The Queen's Birthday holiday long weekend. Similar to the traditional Irish music summer festivals in Ireland, Ceol Aneas (kee-ol an-ass) features a ceili dance, a concert, instrument tuition workshops and traditional Irish music sessions. This annual event is one of Australasia's major Irish music gatherings, attracting, musicians and traditional Irish music lovers from around New Zealand and overseas.

Live traditional Irish music will be provided by Ceol Aneas tutors and students. The dances will be called so you will be able to learn as you go. This is dancing at its best - a fun filled community activity and great exercise too. Come along and elebrate traditional Irish music in our showcase concert featuring world renowned musicians including Alan Doherty, one of the most identifiable and respected flute-players in Irish music. Alan is widely recognised as a lead soloist on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack and for his time with the band Gráda. Gerry Paul plays guitar with Gráda which he co-founded in 2001. He also tours and records with bluegrass legend Tim O'Brien. Tola Custy's work as a fiddler and composer with groups such as Calico and Guidewires is greatly admired. As well as his Clare traditional music heritage, he has a large repertoire of foreign and newly composed material. Tola has also played with Gráda, and together with Alan and Gerry they will lift the roof in celebration of the music. Rounding out the evening, this highlight concert will feature all our festival instrumental tutors and guests including All Ireland Banjo champion Jody Moran, Seamus Breathnach on button accordion and from New Zealand, award winning whistle player Adam Guyton.
