Call for Chorus Art Cabinets Mural Designs
Chorus and NCC wish to continue the celebration of Nelsons creativity with the commissioning of four new artworks on Chorus telecommunications cabinets in Nelson. Two medium and two small sized cabinets have been selected for transformation and Arts Council Nelson now invite Nelson residents to submit images for consideration by noon on MONDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2022.
Artists will receive the fee associated with the cabinet they have been selected to paint and will be reimbursed for materials up to a maximum of $150. Payment will follow the completion of the mural.

THEME: The cabinet on the corner of Atawhai Drive & Paremata St should embrace the Te Reo for Atawhai meaning 'to show kindness' or 'to foster'
The other three cabinets have no theme. Designs should enhance the environment and will be selected on their originality and general appeal.
Entrants may submit as many designs as they like, for one or all four of the cabinets. Each design should show the full colour image as it would appear on the front and sides of the cabinet (the back requires no image).
Selected designs will be recommended to Chorus who have final approval. Payments will be made to selected artists on completion of the work.

The Selection Process
All submissions will be shown to Councils iwi cultural forum “Te Ohu Toi Ahurea”. Here the cultural managers from the eight mana whenua Iwi will advise Council on cultural matters. For any Toi Māori (Māori art) imagery presented for this project, there will be a requirement that appropriate cultural competency is evident. For example, if a submitting artist includes Toi Māori imagery in their design, information on their cultural affiliations, whakapapa, Toi Māori training and mentoring plus any iwi/ Māori engagement undertaken, should be provided to support their submission.
Selection of artists/designs will be undertaken by Councils Art Selection Panel which includes both Council staff and public/community members. Preferred designs will be suggested to Chorus who will give final approval of the selection.

Making a Submission
Submissions must be emailed to Arts Council Nelson and include:
  • A completed Entry Form. (If you submit multiple designs, please supply a separate form for each entry).  FORM MAY BE DOWNLOADED ABOVE
  • A brief explanation of your design and if appropriate, how it has a particular relevance to site (500 word maximum) If your design is chosen this may be used, along with your image and details on digital platforms. (Including Nelson City Council, Chorus and ACN websites and social media platforms).
  • Colour digital images preferably JPEG files less than 2mb of your design(s) which should show the design covering the street front and the two side panels. If this is problematic, please contact ACN who can assist.
  • Budget (estimated cost of paint/brushes/preparation materials) NB: Do not include the cost of the Anti-Graffiti coating as this will be supplied by Nelson City Council / Arts Council Nelson.

Terms and Conditions for Selected Artists
 * The artist(s) whose design(s) is/are selected by Chorus will be responsible for cleaning and applying a primer to the cabinet, painting the design on the cabinet, and applying a graffiti coating on completion which will be supplied to the artist.
  • The cost of agreed materials (primer, paint, brushes etc) will be covered by Chorus up to a maximum of $150.
  • The artist will be responsible for the Health and Safety of the work site and must send Chorus a risk management plan prior to work starting. Arts Council Nelson can assist with this as required.
  • On completion of the mural ACN shall check the work has met the agreed requirements after which the artist will invoice Chorus for their mural fee and materials as agreed.
