The aim of this exhibition is to showcase the use of fibre and textiles in a
challenging and more conceptual way from their more general usage.

Tasman District Council Award
for ‘Excellence in contemporary interpretation of work featuring traditional techniques ". Cash prize of $1,500.00
Nelson City Council Award
for the work which best embraces the theme of ‘Water and / or Light. Cash prize of $1,500.00.
Business Development Company Award
‘ for a work which uses any type of fibre to stretch our imagination’. Cash prize $300.
Entry is by submission of photos on CD with entry form, which should be sent to Arts Council Nelson, 3, Halifax St, PO Box 566, Nelson, 7040.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS ~ Awards will be announced and presented at the Gala Opening and Awards Presentation at The Refinery Artspace on Friday 23 March 2012 at 5.30pm. All entrants, their partners and Arts Council Nelson Members are invited to attend.
2012 ~ CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
1. This exhibition is open to anyone currently living in New Zealand
2. Artworks must predominantly feature fibres or textiles. These may be natural, synthetic or any combination of these.
3. Work will be selected for the exhibition on ORIGINALITY, the emphasis being on work which stretches the boundaries of fibre art to give a contemporary twist to the more traditional view of this medium. Work must be the artist's own design and execution.
4. Work may use any technique or mix of techniques, and may be two or three dimensional. There is no limitation on size of work which may be free -standing, wall mounted or suspended.
5. Artists may submit up to 3 pieces of work. The entry fee for each work submitted is $15.00 or ($10 per work for Arts Council Nelson Members). Cheques should be made payable to Arts Council Nelson. Please note that entry fees are non-refundable. For information regarding Arts Council Nelson Membership please go to our membership page.
6. Entry and Initial selection of work will be by photo on C.D only. Please ensue that your name and contact details are clearly marked on the CD, and that file names correspond with the work(s) thereon. Accompanying your CD should be your entry fee(s) and completed entry form.
It is our intention to produce an illustrated catalogue of the 2012 Changing Threads Exhibition utilising the images of work supplied by artists on their entry submission CD. We therefore request that entrants supply high resolution images which depict the work it in its best possible light for both the initial selection and printing purposes.
The catalogue will also include written information about the artist and /or their work. For this purpose, entrants are also requested to include a separate file on the disc giving a brief overview of their practice and the submitted work.
An optional photograph of the artist may also be published alongside this written information. Artists wishing to take this option should also supply a good quality photograph of themselves on the entry CD, for this purpose.
Please note that Arts Council Nelson reserves full editorial control over what supplied information is used for the final publication of the catalogue.
7. Please note that CD’s will not be returned unless requested and a stamped self-addressed envelope is enclosed.
CD entries should be mailed to Arts Council Nelson, PO Box 566 Nelson. 7040, and MUST arrive by Friday 17 February 2012.
Entrants will be advised of the outcome of the initial selection process by Friday 24 February.
8. Selected entrants will then be asked to submit actual works, which will be subject to a final selection process, for which the suitability for space, the general look and theme will be considerations in order to best feature a work in the final showcase.
All selected work is to arrive at the Refinery Artspace, 3, Halifax St, Nelson, by 4.pm on 14 March 2012.
All artists will be notified on the outcome of the final selection process prior to the exhibition opening night on Friday 23 March 2012.
9. Award recipients will be chosen by a judging panel whose decision will be final. No correspondence will be entered into regarding the judging outcomes.
10. Work must arrive ready for hanging or placing, with instructions and inclusion of any extra requirements if unusual. Please be aware that it may not be possible to cater to any specific lighting requests due to constraints of the gallery layout, however all efforts will be made to hang selected works to their best advantage. All packaging and hanging materials must be clearly named
11. The artist’s name, title of work and sale price (or NFS) must be written clearly on the back of the artwork. Artists must ensure that they display the correct price on the back of their work as the organizers will accept no responsibility or entertain any claims in respect of the sale of an item other than the price shown on the work. 30% + Gst commission will be taken on all sales, although it is not compulsory that work be for sale.
12. All selected work must remain on exhibition for the duration of the exhibition.
13. Insurance is the responsibility of the artist, both in the gallery and in transit. Whilst all due care will be taken, the organizers can not be held responsible for any damage or loss incurred.
14. Local artists should collect unsold work from the Refinery Artspace, on Saturday 21 April between 2 and 3pm. For artists outside Nelson, return courier tickets must be included with the artwork, in a clearly marked envelope. Unsold works will be packaged and returned as soon as possible following the exhibition.
15. Use of imagery. In entering the Awards, artists impart permission for short-listed entries to be exhibited at the Refinery Artspace for the duration of the exhibition, and for work to be reproduced for cataloguing purposes of this and promotional usage for future Changing Threads Fibre Art Awards.
Nelson City Council reserve the right to reproduce and use the image of the winning entry of their sponsored Award, for use in regional promotional material at their discretion. Work title and artist acknowledgements will apply in any such usage. Please indicate on the entry form should you not wish your entry to be considered for this particular award.
16. In submitting works to this event, artists impart their understanding and consent of the above terms and conditions.
