Thursday 1st July

Nelson Film Society

'The Italian' (Andrei Kravchuk, Russia, 2005, 99 mins):
Despite the title, this heart-wrenching debut feature film has nothing to do with Italy other than it was to have been the destination to which lively little six-years-old Vanya was to have been sent for adoption. However, he doesn't want to go and escapes to street life in St Petersburg instead! At The Suter Art Gallery & Theatre, 6pm. Public join at the door or '3 for $30'. Contact

Ph. 03 5483560, gurli@xtra.co.nz

Thursday 1st–Saturday 10th July 2010

Play -One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Dale Wasseman

The central character, McMurphy, has been sentenced to a term of confinement (until he is deemed better) to a psychiatric ward. It was either this or prison, so the former was chosen naturally. By contrast the patients of the mental institution volunteered to be there. This seems extremely odd at first….but as Cuckoo’s Nest progresses one sees the long term effect that conditioning can have on people. The play is extremely funny until….well,it isn’t!

Theatre Royal, 7.30pm. Tickets from Everyman Records or at the theatre door.

STICK 'EM UP

Friday 25th June–Sunday 25th July 2010

Dr Ed Hanfling, Auckland based art historian, writer, curator and critic for the journal Art New Zealand, is an expert in abstraction and known for his formalist approach to appraising art – that is, making an assessment of an art work based purely on its formal qualities; composition, colour, texture, pattern and scale.

This exhibition is an experiment that plays on Hanfling’s expertise – he has been invited to make a selection of works from the collection without any contextual or historical information and will have an exhibition team working behind him to hang the show, all within a period of one week. Exhibition labels and a lecture in association with The Suter Friends Winter Lecture series will provide insight into the process and emphasis the importance of displaying art works in public art collections.

SubArt Collective: INFILL Art Exhibition

Saturday 26th June–Sunday 8th August 2010

INFILL stages exhibitions which interrogate the terrain between fine art and design. After previous exhibition ‘experiments’; Showroom (2007) at Objectspace, Auckland, and They don’t make them like they used to: Sustainability in Design (2007) at City Gallery, Wellington, the group presents a collaborative installation in The Suter’s wooden floor gallery.

INFILL investigates the contemporary suburban experience and plays with the similarity of proportions between the Old Gallery and the 1/4 acre section. Individual pieces of work will form a body that creates a relationship between the organic and the architectural and suggests that 'inhabitancy' involves a desire to control and contain our environment, as well as a need cultivate a sense of place and belonging.

Vanessa Crowe, Emma Febvre-Richards, Kate Linzey, Lilian Mutsaers, Wendy Neale and Genevieve Packer.

Saturday 26 June 2 pm - Floortalk: with members of SubArt for an introduction to their ongoing project, experimental exhibition processes and overview of individual works.
